Another International Airline Accident Claims Lives

68 Listed As dead In Iran-Bound Kyrgyz Itek Air 737 Crash

Tragedy has struck the international airline community again as an Itek Air 737 went down, killing at least 68 people, according to current reports.The Boeing 737-200 was owned by Kyrgyz carrier, Itek Air, but operated by Iran Aseman Airlines. The aircraft went down near Manas International Airport, near the capital city of Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek. Ninety people were reported aboard and some 22 are currently reported to have survived.

The planned retirement of the space shuttle fleet in 2010 will bring to a close an era that opened in the Antelope Valley nearly a half century ago. The vehicle which began that era – the M2-F1 – was an unlikely forefather to the shuttle. The world’s first manned lifting body, the M2-F1 was made of wood, had an internal framework of steel tubes, looked like a bathtub sitting on a tricycle, and had no wings.

Zephyr UAV Sets Record

Flies For Three And A Half Days -- Unofficial World Record For Longest Duration Unmanned Flight 

The Zephyr, a solar powered high-altitude long-endurance (HALE) Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) has flown a 'world-beating' three and a half day flight at the US Army's Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona. The solar powered plane flew for 82 hours 37 minutes, exceeding the current official world record for unmanned flight which stands at 30 hours 24 minutes set by Global Hawk in 2001 and Zephyr's previous longest flight of 54 hours achieved last year.

Maxwell Shelters Navy Seahawks From Tropical Storm Fay

Dozens of Navy helicopters evacuated from the Florida coast to Maxwell Air Force Base Aug. 20 in an effort to avoid the destruction of Tropical Storm Fay.Navy Cmdr. Chris Fallia said the decision to evacuate to Maxwell AFB happened when the tropical storm was projected to veer back inland after hugging the East Coast, placing Naval Station Mayport -- located near Jacksonville, Fla. -- directly in the path of the storm.

US Balloonists To Be Challenged By One Of The Best

When the U.S. National Hot Air Balloon Championship launches this week in Anderson, SC, the 50 competing pilots will be challenged by one of their own and one of the best in the world. David Levin of Boulder, CO is Event Director for the 2008 U.S. Nationals. (Later, in September, he will be Event Director at the World Championships in Hofkirchen, Austria.) A NATO E-3A Sentinel and its crew arrived at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C., Aug. 8 to conduct training missions with 4th Fighter Wing aircrews. The  Sentinel and its crew arrived at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C., Aug. 8th to conduct training missions with 4th Fighter Wing aircrews. The Sentinel, which is an Airborne Early Warning and Control System aircraft from Geilenkirchen, Germany, will conduct mock dogfights between the wing's fighter aircraft. Using its trademark 30-foot exterior satellite, the AWACS aircraft will provide Strike Eagle aircrews with "enemy" positions.
