Airborne 05.06.16: Airbus A350XWB 180+ ETOPS, Active Winglets, Troutdale Airport

The FAA has approved the Airbus A350-900 for Extended-range Twin engine aircraft Operations ‘beyond 180 minutes’ diversion time.

This approval means that when the first FAA-affiliated operators start to take delivery of their A350s in 2017 they will be able to serve new direct non-limiting routings, compared with a standard 180 minute diversion time requirement for both FAA and EASA operations. The ETOPS 300 minute option will, in particular, facilitate more efficient transoceanic routes across the North and Mid-Pacific – such as from South-East Asia to the U.S., and Australasia to the U.S. Following certification by EASA, the first customer installation of Tamarack Aerospace’s Atlas Active Winglet system was completed last week on a Cessna Citation CJ aircraft operated by private hire company JetPingu. The installation, which took place at Textron Aviation’s Service Center in Zurich, took approximately 400 man hours to install, which Tamarack says is substantially less time than installing similar passive winglets. The Port of Portland last week voted to shorten the runway at Troutdale Airport to a length that will not support small business jets, which opponents of the move say will lead to the eventual closure of the airport. The Facebook page 'Save Troutdale Airport' indicates that the runways and taxiways of the airport will be dismantled down to gravel and rebuilt to 4,500 feet long and 75 feet wide. It is currently 5,400 feet long and 150 feet wide. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
