Airborne 01.09.17: B-52 LOSES Engine, Tamarack STC, R66 Turbine Marine Approval

Also: Huerta @CES, B-1B Blowout, EAA/IMC Club, Gone West: Lawrence Falwell, Baggage Handler, Yuneec Customer Service, Epson Smart Glasses

A B-52 lost an engine - quite literally - during a training mission out of Minot AFB in North Dakota last Wednesday. In the 1940s Boeing pioneered the concept of mounting jet engines on a pylon underneath the wing on their bomber aircraft for several reasons.

One of these reasons was that a catastrophic engine failure might result in the loss of the engine but would not cause damage to the wing that it was mounted to. Such was the case in this engine failure. One of the aircraft’s eight under wing engines fell from the aircraft during flight operations over an unpopulated area about 25 miles northeast of the base.
The FAA has granted a supplemental type certificate To Tamarack Aerospace Group, for its Active Winglet system for the Cessna CJ business jet. The FAA STC follows the validation of the European Aviation Safety Administration STC granted in December of 2015. Tamarack now has approval for the installation of its Active Winglets on the Cessna CJ, CJ1, CJ1+ & M2 in the U.S. and Europe. The European Aviation Safety Agency has issued final approval for the Robinson R66 Turbine helicopter Marine pop-out float installation. The approval came after tests proved that the floats complied with what is referred to as a Sea-State-4 requirement. The Sea-State refers to the height, period of time, and character of waves on the surface of a large body of water. The tests were conducted in Spain at a facility capable of simulating the required conditions. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
