Classic Aero-TV: Jeppesen Charts - Leading the Paperless Revolution

CEO Mark Van Tine Discusses the Future of Electronic Chart Technology

E-I-C Note: As ANN prepares for its first major LIVE Aero-TV programming, we have to admit that we've been flogging the video geeks to within an inch of their lives to get ready... Still, before we really put the pressure on, we've decided to give them a SLIGHT break and will be offering classic episodes of Aero-TV, all with an Avionics Theme, in order to prepare for "hell week."

We hope you enjoy these truly great episodes as well as the exciting live programming coming up this week. By the way... if you think what Aspen showed off this time was cool, JUST WAIT TIL YOU SEE what they have in store for you this week... Hint, hint...

At the National Business Aviation Association’s 62nd Annual Meeting & Convention (NBAA2009), exhibitors displayed the latest in aviation technology. Aero-TV took the opportunity to speak with President and CEO of Jeppesen, Mark Van Tine, about what’s on the horizon for the company and the future of paperless flight bags.

Just days before the start of NBAA2009, Jeppesen announced two significant advancements for their electronic chart services. Forming a new partnership, Jeppesen and Satcom Direct will now allow each company to sell a bundled solution to customers, combining Jeppesen’s JetPlan flight planning service and Satcom Direct’s FlightDeck Freedom TM cockpit communications services.

The newly available dual service will provide a one-stop solution for mutual customers by enhancing efficiency and providing economic benefits for Business Aviation operators.

In addition, Jeppesen announced that it had received an AC20-148 Reusable Software Component (RSC) acceptance letter from the Federal Aviation Administration; only the second letter to be issued by the FAA, the RSC “pre-certifies” a software component thus eliminating the need to re-certify internal elements of the component each time it is implemented onto a system.

The acceptance will greatly reduce overall certification requirements allowing Jeppesen electronics charts to be quickly and efficiently integrated with onboard aviation navigation systems. The achievement marks a significant move towards Jeppesen’s 2010 technology focus:  quick, easy electronic charts implementation and data driven, real-time delivery.
