New Mexico Town Mulls Partial Drone Ban

Would Fall Under The City's Public Nuisance Policy

Another day, another possible drone ban. This time, it's the city of Rio Rancho in New Mexico that is looking into at least a partial ban on UAVs, citing complaints about privacy.

Television station KRQE reports that the Rio Rancho City Council gave initial consideration to changes in its public nuisance policy at its meeting Monday night. One member of the council said that they has received multiple complaints from women who say drones are hovering outside their windows.

City Councilor Marlene Feuer said that the changes is not an anti-drone ordinance, and the operators can still fly well above residential neighborhoods. “They just shouldn’t be on private property following people, looking in their windows, going to their backyards,” Feuer said.

Feuer said she supports drones generally for recreational uses and capturing still and video images of the scenery around Rio Rancho.

City officials say they want to have a clear policy in place to give law enforcement the authority to respond to complaints about drones.

The state already has laws against voyeurism.
