Indian Dhruv Helicopter: Problems?

Not Grounded, But "Aspects Of The Rotors Have To Be Addressed"

During a press conference to tout an improved safety record in the Air Force in general and on the MiG-21 fighter in particular, Air Marshal P S Ahluwalia, Director General of Flight Inspection & Safety for the IAF, found himself grilled on teething problems with the indigenous "Dhruv" helicopter.

The HAL "Dhruv" combines Eurocopter technology with Indian concepts and a powerful powerplant to provide a light utility helicopter optimized for operations in the extremes of Indian terrain and climate (think Himalayas).

Ahluwalia wouldn't admit that there were any problems... exactly... with the new program.

"I will not say the fleet has been grounded, but there are some aspects of the rotors that have to be addressed," he said. But in keeping with the general theme of the press conference, he remained positive. "A team comprising representatives of the three services and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited - the original equipment manufacturers - are on the job."

Well, that's all right then.
