Sport version in new 6.25 inch form factor, Lite to be TSO'd by
RC Allen
Today at AirVenture 2004, Greg Richter, founder of Blue Mountain
Avionics, held a press conference to announce news related to his
company's EFIS product line and efforts to certify the
EFIS/Lite.
The EFIS/Sport product was announced at Sun-N-Fun 2004 and is
now available. Priced at $6,500, the EFIS/Sport is a 6.25" form
factor version of the company's popular large format EFIS/One.
Among the features of the EFIS/Sport is a daylight readable high
brightness display and a design that can operate in the full
milspec temperature range, from -40C to +85C. It comes with a
moving map that offers worldwide coverage at no additional charge,
with updates priced at only $50.
One of the more interesting features of this unit, which it
shares with the EFIS/One, is its three-dimensional virtual reality
out-the-window terrain view. It can optionally be set up to monitor
your engine and other systems, and can also be purchased with
interfaces to WSI Satellite Weather and FADEC systems.
A smaller product from Blue Mountain is the EFIS/Lite, designed
to fit in a standard instrument hole. This one is priced at $2,795
and is being offered at AirVenture at a show special price of
$2,595. The EFIS/Lite has most of the features of the EFIS/One and
EFIS/Sport, except for things like the three-dimensional terrain
presentation. The big news about the EFIS/Lite, though, is that the
product is scheduled for FAA TSO certification in 2005 by the RC
Allen Company. Since Blue Mountain is not interested in seeking FAA
certification, they have negotiated with RC Allen to pursue it.
They will also be the sole source for the TSO'd product.
According to Richter, there are now some 500 EFIS/One's
installed worldwide, plus another 300 EFIS/Lite's.
