Tom Turner's Aero-Craft 101: Tire Failure
Tire failure on
aircraft has received some national attention in the past week,
with two unrelated incidents on May 2 involving Embraer 145
regional jets.
A Continental Express RJ blew a main gear tire on takeoff,
prompting an emergency landing in the eye of national media.
Earlier that day, an American Eagle EMB 145 blew a tire on landing,
causing the airplane to veer off the runway, coming to a stop about
25 feet off the pavement.
Happily, both incidents ended with no injury to passengers and
crew -- and only minor damage to the aircraft. But both remind
us that tire damage is possibility that pilots need to be prepared
for. Today, CFI Tom Turner talks about aircraft tire damage
incidents -- what can cause them, and how to deal with a blown
tire.

- ANN's Daily 'ASR' Feature Aero-Cast: ANN will
