Australian Regional Carrier Gives Another $1 Million For Drought Relief

Rex Lends A Hand To Affected Communities

Regional Express (Rex), Australia’s largest independent regional airline, tells ANN it will provide more drought aid for affected-communities as low rainfall in several parts of Australia continues one of Australia’s worst droughts.

Rex’s Deputy Chairman John Sharp announced that Rex would provide $1 million in travel on its services for the FY2007/08, after the $1 million set aside by Rex in FY2006, and the $0.5 million in FY2005.

“The Board of Rex understands the severe impact the drought is having on many people in the rural and regional communities that we service and simply feel compelled to do something. Many regions we service throughout New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia are amongst the worst drought affected areas in Australia. We sympathize with the extreme situations many farmers, businesses and community members may be facing at this time and want to help alleviate their financial stresses.

“As we did in 2006, Rex will work with federal, state and local organizations to set up a fund for regional air travel," Sharp continued. "This is a co-operative effort and Rex will contribute $4.00 in air travel on Rex services for every $1.00 contributed by eligible community organizations. The fund will be administered by the community organization but must be used for air travel on Rex for an activity associated with providing relief or assistance from the impact of the drought.

“An open invitation to apply for assistance is extended to community-based organizations whose activities are specifically targeted to alleviate the impact of the drought not just on farmers but also on others in rural communities, small business, community groups and individuals," Sharp said.

The Hon Mark Vaile MP, Deputy Prime Minister, Federal National Party Leader and Minister for Transport and Regional Services, lauded Rex's efforts.

“At a time when rural and regional communities need the support of all Australians, it is terrific to see Rex assisting the rural communities that support them. Well done Rex.”
