AOPA Air Safety Foundation Sends Out Free Aerodynamics Course

Spread The Word: It's All About Attitude When Talking Of Stalls/Spins

The AOPA Air Safety Foundation wants pilots to remember a basic tenet from their days in flight training: when it comes to stalls... it's all about attitude, NOT airspeed.

Understanding why an aircraft flies -- and more importantly, when and why it stops flying -- is key to avoiding stall/spin accidents, which remain one of the leading causes of fatal accidents.

In order to reach pilots who might otherwise be unaware of it, the ASF recently mailed CDs containing its Essential Aerodynamics: Stalls, Spins, and Safety online course to 180,000 pilots, both members and non-members of AOPA, for whom the Association has no email address.

"This is an unprecedented outreach campaign and it addresses one of our greatest challenges," said Bruce Landsberg, executive director of the Air Safety Foundation. "It’s the people who are not routinely continuing their pilot education who could probably benefit the most from our online courses, so we’re not waiting for them to come to us – we’re putting the course right in their mailboxes."

Essential Aerodynamics is the AOPA Air Safety Foundation's popular interactive course that provides need-to-know concepts for avoiding maneuvering accidents. Without going into the complexities of flight, it explains what happens when a pilot moves a control, and when and how those control movements could potentially lead to trouble.

Essential Aerodynamics is the latest online course offered free to all pilots by the AOPA Air Safety Foundation. The Air Safety Foundation is the world’s only safety organization dedicated exclusively to general aviation safety.
