BWI Terminal Evacuated Because Of Security Threat

Anybody Seen My Knife?

Portions of Baltimore-Washington International Airport were evacuated Monday after a baggage screener was unable to stop a passenger carrying a knife in a backpack.

It happened just outside Tier D at about 5:20 am (EDT) when a spokeswoman for the airport says the screener could describe neither the backpack nor its owner.

The entire area was evacuated as the airport issued a "red alert," forcing everyone who was already inside to go back through the entire screening process again. Flights were delayed for as long as two hours before the airport said everything was back to normal, more than four hours later.

As passengers were being rescreened, the TSA says several banned items turned up -- including a knife. But they were unable to say whether that knife was the knife for which they'd been searching.

What about the screener who missed the contraband in the first place? A TSA spokesman says that screener and the person responsible for pulling the bag aside will be given "remedial" training.
