Forget Mainland Souvenirs -- Hawaii Hungry For Krispy-Kreme

They're Flyin' 'Em In By The Plane Load

Just what IS it about Krispy Kreme doughnuts? Most of us will admit to a deep and very personal love affair with the glazed confections -- they're so easy on the taste buds but so cruel to the waistline.

Still, they've become an incredible smash-hit in the Hawaiian Islands. See, in Hawaii, there's a Japanese custom called, "omiage." If you're on vacation, you're obliged to bring a little something back to friends and family. The runaway favorite omiage gift? Oh, yeah. Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

We're not talking just one or two, either. We're talking about so many boxes full of doughnuts that it's becoming something of a problem for airlines.

"The locals bring so many boxes of doughnuts on board that we can't always fit them on our flights. Some people will put five or six boxes in an overhead bin," says Mark Dunkerley, president of Hawaiian Airlines.

Say, come to think of it... anybody hungry right now?
