Over 1,700 LPV Approaches Now Available, More Coming
Thousands of WAAS capable
Garmin GPSs are shipping to eager pilots... but to date there's
been no single, comprehensive source of WAAS information available,
making it hard to learn to fly these new approaches.
Max Trescott's latest CD-ROM course, which runs on Windows and
Macintosh, makes it easy to learn all of the details of flying with
WAAS. Designed for the Garmin 430W, 530W, 480, G900X and G1000, the
course leads you step-by-step through flying these approaches.
Videos demonstrate the flying of actual approaches, and software
simulators let you practice loading and flying these
approaches.
WAAS is the FAA's Wide Area Augmentation System, which enhances
basic GPS accuracy to allow GPS approaches with vertical guidance
to be safely flown to as low as 200 feet above the ground. This
makes it possible to design ILS quality approaches for thousands of
airports without adding expensive ground-based navigational aids.
Already, more than 1,700 of these LPV (Localizer Performance with
Vertical guidance) and LNAV/VNAV (Lateral Navigation with Vertical
Navigation) approaches are available in the US, and the FAA is
committed to designing an additional 300 new approaches each
year.
More than 50,000 installed Garmin 430 and 530 GPS receivers are
upgradeable to WAAS capability, making these approaches readily
available to thousands of pilots. All new 430W and 530W units are
WAAS capable, as are all G900X glass cockpits for experimental
aircraft. The G1000 glass cockpit in 2007 model Cessnas is also
WAAS capable, and other manufacturers of G1000-equipped aircraft
are expected to offer this capability in their new aircraft soon.
No announcements have been made on upgrading older G1000’s
for WAAS.
The course is taught by Master CFIs Max Trescott and Susan
Parson, and covers the "gotchas" that can trick even experienced
GPS pilots. It features Max Trescott's Searchable Learning System
that lets you keyword search the entire course to quickly find any
information.
