'A Major Backup On Cumberland... Hey, What's Wrong With My Landing Gear?'

Traffic Reporter Makes Safe Emergency Landing

A traffic reporter in Knoxville, TN had to deal with more than just bottlenecks Tuesday, when the landing gear of his Cessna 182RG wouldn't lock into place.

Pete Michaels noticed the maingear wasn't fully down while on approach to land after the morning rush hour. After unsuccessfully trying to hand-crank the gear down, he had to circle Island Home Airport in South Knoxville for several hours, burning off fuel.

Just before noon, Michaels brought his plane in for a smooth belly landing on the grass alongside the runway. Of course, local news crews got it all on tape. In fact, CNN broadcast the incident live.

The pilot was uninjured, and Michaels says the plane only suffered minor damage. The Cessna's nosewheel was down and locked, and that prevented a propeller strike.

Michaels' website notes he is a veteran pilot of more than 30 years, who has logged 25,000 hours. He also has been a broadcaster for more than 40 years.
