Airborne 10.25.16: The Aviation World Mourns Bob Hoover

An early morning call brought ANN's Jim Campbell the worst news imaginable... the loss of one of America's greatest heroes and our dear friend, Bob Hoover.

We'll have much more to say about it shortly, but just know that the aviation world has never been richer than it has been because of the presence of this amazing man... and we will miss him as long as we live. It was announced over this last weekend that Rockwell Collins and B/E Aerospace have entered into a definitive agreement under which Rockwell Collins will acquire B/E Aerospace for approximately $6.4 billion in cash and stock, plus the assumption of $1.9 billion in net debt. The transaction combines Rockwell Collins’ capabilities in flight deck avionics, cabin electronics, mission communications, simulation and training, and information management systems with B/E Aerospace's range of cabin interior products. The South African government is once again attempting to require that all airports that are related to tourism would be required to be licensed. This means they would be required to have staffing for equipment related to emergency fire and rescue capabilities. This proposed rule is not based on aircraft types served, the airport size, or amount of operations. This kind of over-regulation would make the owner of the airport liable for any accident or other mishap that might occur, and says there is no accident data to support this kind of regulation. Here we go again with a local municipality passing rules regarding the operation of small unmanned aerial systems. Photographers wishing to use a sUAS to capture special events in Fowlerville, Michigan will need a special $50 permit to do so. Radio station WHMI reports that the person applying for the permit must carry a $1 million insurance policy. It’s reported that the village established the permit process so that officials can be sure the person operating the aircraft has insurance. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
