Washington State Governor Signs Biomass-To-Jet Fuel Bill

Will Use Logging Waste To Produce Aviation Fuel

Washington State Governor Chris Gregoire (pictured) has signed into law two bills requested by the state's Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark. One could lead to jet fuel made from logging waste.

House Bill 1422 authorizes DNR to collaborate on the development of a sustainable source of aviation fuel using forest biomass such as logging slash and sawmill wood residues. Working with the state Department of Commerce, Washington State University and the University of Washington, DNR will move forward with a demonstration project for the concept.

“We have an opportunity to bring our timber heritage and our aviation industry together to contribute to a more sustainable energy future,” Goldmark said following the signing.

The bill was introduced in the Washington State legislator by Democrat Rep. Derek Stanford, who said the measure would promote aviation biofuel production and advance renewable energy technology. He also pushed the jobs aspect of the bill, saying the research would draw investments in that renewable energy technology.
