Sky Designs RV-10 Extended Range Tanks Take Flight

Long-Distance Fuel Option Enters Service with First Home Builders of "RV-10ER"

Sky Designs' new RV-10ER Extended Range fuel tank kit is already airborne, only a few months after beginning shipments in the summer of 2022. The first pilot to use the kit was Richard Connell of Sydney, Australia. His RV-10 build, assisted by local builder assist company Synergy Air South, took to the skies in June of 2022. Enjoying the RV-10, Connell noted with excitement that the ER tanks would add considerable range and endurance and soon nabbed some of the first units sent out into the wild.

Cessna Delivers 3,000th Caravan

Textron Aviation—the general aviation business unit of the Textron conglomerate and purveyor of Beechcraft, Cessna, and (formerly) Hawker Aircraft—has announced the delivery of the three-thousandth Cessna Caravan. The milestone aircraft, a Grand Caravan EX, was purchased by Azula Conecto, a subsidiary of São Paulo-based Brazilian air-carrier Azul Airlines. The sale speaks to the popularity of Cessna’s 208 platform, and further solidifies the design’s well-earned reputation for robustness, reliability, ease of operation, serviceability, and profit-earning potential.

FAA Clarifies Private Airport Charting Change

Private Airports to Remain on VFR Charts, with Removal of “Emergency” Labeling

A bit of confusion regarding VFR charting rules going forward was subtly cleared up this week when the FAA issued a follow-up notice regarding a September publication. That notice had said that  “Effective November 3, 2022, Visual Flight Rules (VFR) aeronautical charts will no longer make reference to emergency value in private airport charting.”

AAL Pilots Raise Concerns over Amended Cockpit Protocols

Allied Pilots Association (APA), the labor union by which American Airlines’ 15,000 pilots are represented, has voiced concerns over cockpit procedures recently and ostensibly recklessly implemented by the Fort Worth, Texas-based air-carrier. The new protocols reportedly pertain to flight-deck call-outs and the coordination of PIC and SIC duties during low-visibility approaches, rejected take-offs, and similarly critical phases of flight.

A medical flight crew from the Tennessee National Guard conducted an emergency air evacuation mission after two hikers became stranded on the Appalachian Trail Dec. 31. Shortly after 5:15 a.m. on New Year’s Eve, the Tennessee Military Department and Tennessee Emergency Management Agency were notified of two hikers needing assistance in the Sampson Mountain Wilderness Area south of Johnson City.

GAMA Issues Statement on Safety Management System Proposal

NPRM Incoming to Expand Reporting Requirements for Air Tour Operators

The General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) weighed in on the FAA's notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) regarding the Safety Management System (SMS). GAMA President and CEO, Pete Bunce said that its own SMS recommendations have seen use by the EASA abroad as part of its best practices package before expressing enthusiastic reception to the idea of the FAA following suit. He stops short of explicitly approving of the proposed SMS rule, only stating that GAMA is looking forward to reviewing and commenting on the FAA's work. Should it be found up to snuff, the group will likely toss its full weight behind supporting the change.

Pilot Felt A “Jolt” And The Engine “Seemed To Power Down, Like The Engine Went To Idle”

On December 29, 2022, about 1327 eastern standard time, a Piper PA-24-260, N9026P, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Athens, Georgia. The pilot sustained minor injuries and the passenger was not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. The pilot and passenger departed Athens/Ben Epps Airport (AHN), Athens, Georgia, with 36 gallons of fuel around 1322 on an instrument flight plan.

Curtiss Museum, bearing the name of pioneer aviator and Hammondsport’s favorite son, is located on State Route 54, one half mile south of the village of Hammondsport, New York. Dedicated to the memory of Glenn Hammond Curtiss, the museum contains a priceless collection relating to early aviation and regional history. The museum also features a 75-seat theater, large open area for special events and a museum store. In addition to seeing the museum displays and exhibits, visitors are welcome to visit the Restoration Shop, talk with volunteer craftsman and watch them work on historic aircraft.
