Tornado Strikes Florida’s Broward County, Tosses Aircraft

Multiple Aircraft Damaged at North Perry Airport

At approximately 21:30 EDT on the night of 27 September 2022, as the southeastern U.S. braced for Hurricane Ian’s landfall, a separate storm—believed to have been a tornado—struck the city of Pembroke Pines in southeastern Florida’s Broward County. Damage caused by the storm, though widespread, was particularly heavy at North Perry Airport (HWO), where some 15 aircraft were overturned and otherwise battered about, and a number of hangars were damaged.

From a modest 1972 debut during which 13 balloons launched from a shopping mall parking lot, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta has grown to the world’s premier ballooning event. The FAA has established a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) area within a four-mile radius of the center of the Balloon Fiesta Park. Control of manned and unmanned aircraft within the TFR is at the sole discretion of the FAA and the Balloon Fiesta stewards.

Recovery of Lost DHC-3 Otter Underway

Investigation of Tragic Floatplane Accident Ongoing

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), U.S. Navy, and personnel from Washington State’s Island County have undertaken the recovery of N725TH, the 1967 de Havilland DHC-3 Otter that went down in Western Washington’s Puget Sound on 4 September. Airplane Had Just Undergone An Avionics Upgrade At A Maintenance Facility In Myrtle Beach

On September 14, 2022, about 1222 eastern daylight time, a Piper PA-28R-201 airplane, N62FC, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Conway, South Carolina. The pilot and passenger were fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. The flight departed Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR), Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, about 1205, and was en route to Columbus County Municipal Airport (CPC), Whiteville, North Carolina.
