Airborne 09.14.22: New Shepherd Failure, Tamarack Adds M2Gen2, Airline $$$

Also: SF50 Vision Crash, Qatar v Airbus, Late September Artemis Launch?, DHC-3 Wreckage Found

Blue Origin viewers got a little bit of excitement this week as the uncrewed NS-23 launch ended with some dramatic flare as the crew capsule apparently aborted the launch and departed the booster. Viewers of the livestreamed launch saw NS-23 ascend to a height of about 30,000 feet before spying an unexpected spurt of flames from the New Shepard crew capsule. The capsule appeared to ignite its rocket-powered escape system just over a minute after launch... Tamarack announced the first SMARTWING upgrade of Cessna’s Citation M2 GEN2—an aircraft Cessna’s parent company, Textron Aviation, asserts will: “… usher in the next generation of

Update: Uncrewed Blue Origin Rocket Suffers Booster Malfunction

New Shepard Escape System Proved Effective

A mission-ending anomaly occurred during an unmaned flight of Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket on the morning of 12 September 2022. No lives were lost in the incident, and both Blue Origin and New Shepard—within the context of spaceflight malfunctions—acquitted themselves honorably. Had a crew been aboard the capsule, they would have experienced a memorable tumult of racket and high gravitational forces before landing—inauspiciously but unhurt—in the West Texas desert.

Aero-TV at Osh22: SF-1 Archon SportPlane is Everyman’s Fighter

Miramar Looks with Hector International Prices

Even the most J-3 Cub-loving, low-and-slow-going, staunchly traditional pilots secretly aspire to fly jet fighters—at least once. Not in combat, not for the duration of a career, but for an afternoon or two, high above the earth, alone in the vastness, astride power unmatched, and performance unequaled. Seductive though the notion of flying a jet fighter may be, the monetary realities of owning such a contraption are starkly terrifying. The legacy F-16 costs a cool $8,000-per-hour to operate, and fifth-generation machines such as Lockheed Martin’s F-35 and F-22 get aloft to the tun

Airborne 09.02.22: 20th TBM 960, Chinook Grounding, Artemis I

Also: Air France Brawl, Pilot Training Book, B-2 Modernization, Lufthansa 787

Daher's newest version of the TBM family, the TBM 960, has been a popular addition to the fold. The TBM has proven a fast seller at home and abroad. The lucky recipient of aircraft number 20 was Johnie Weems, a South Florida businessman. This plane will be his fourth TBM, no small feat for any model in the competitive business turboprop market. The winning formula, he says, is the single-pilot capability of the Daher aircraft. The Army issued a surprising grounding order earlier this week, halting flight operations for more than 400 Chinook helicopters over an issue that coul

ANN's Daily Aero-Term (09.14.22): Mountain Wave

Mountain Wave Mountain waves occur when air is being blown over a mountain range or even the ridge of a sharp bluff area. As the air hits the upwind side of the range, it starts to climb, thus creating what is generally a smooth updraft which turns into a turbulent downdraft as the air passes the crest of the ridge. Mountain waves can cause significant fluctuations in airspeed and altitude with or without associated turbulence.
