Of Low Spirits and Sticking to One’s Position

The United States Air Force has confirmed that recovery operations remain underway for the B-2A Spirit bomber that made an emergency landing at Missouri’s Whiteman Air Force Base on 10 December 2022. The incident—the second of its type the last 15-months—has forced closure of Whiteman’s only runway and impugned the wisdom of basing the entirety of America’s B-2 fleet and the two bomber wings by which it’s operated at an installation with only one runway.

Maxwell AFB Prepares for New Airframe

908th Airlift Wing to Train USAF Students on New MH-139As 

Montgomery Alabama's Maxwell AFB has been chosen as the home of the first MH-139A Grey Wolf training unit. The new helo was unveiled in 2020 as the upcoming replacement for the long-lived - but long in the tooth - UH-1N Huey. In 2020 Air Force assigned the unit as a training flight which would pull double duty in providing security and support for the series of intercontinental ballistic missile fields spanning Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, Colorado and Nebraska. The unit's MH-139 mission replaces the Reserve’s 908th Airlift Wing and its C-130Hs.

ORC Takes Delivery of ATR 42-600

Deal Includes OEM Global Maintenance Agreement

On 16 December 2022, Oriental Air Bridge, better known as ORC, took delivery of its first ATR 42-600 covered by an ATR Global Maintenance Agreement contract (GMA). The high-wing, twin turboprop airliner was delivered in Toulouse—where ATR is headquartered—and bears the new ORC livery. The airline plans to start operating the 48-seat machine along its Nagasaki Fukuoka route in July 2023. By dint of its GMA contract, ORC avails itself of ATR’s OEM expertise, thereby reducing maintenance costs and boosting dispatch reliability.

Newest TBM Variant Finds Home with 930 Pilot

Daher today announced the first Swiss delivery of its newest aircraft, a "top-of-the-line", fully outfitted TBM 960. The recipient was Swiss pilot Paolo Buzzi, an experienced pilot with plenty of time in his older TBM 930. The delivery brings the number of Daher TBMs in Switzerland to a dozen - sure, not too many for a whole country, but Daher notes that it's doing all right in a land with less than 9 million inhabitants. The TBM was dealt through SwissFly Aero, a Zurich-based Daher dealer.

NTSB Prelim: Mooney M20J

She Asked If The Sun Was In The Flying Pilot’S Eyes, And He Said “Yes”

On December 2, 2022, about 1504 eastern standard time, a Mooney M20J, N3515H, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident at Falmouth Airpark (5B6), Falmouth, Massachusetts. The private pilot was fatally injured, and commercial pilot received serious injuries. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. According to a friend of the (private) pilot, he said earlier that day, he and 3 other aircraft (including the accident airplane), flew from 5B6 to Westfield-Barnes Regional Airport (BAF), Westfield/Springfield, Massachusetts, for lunch.
