Airborne Oshkosh Day 1: Avidyne Vantage, Stratos 716X, Curti-Zefhir Heli

07.26.21: Opening Comments, Redtail Piper 100i, AeroEducate Builds, Pelton Int'vw Part 1

Jack Pelton opens up a VERY busy first day of EAA AirVenture after a two year drought. He talks about how busy day 1 has been  and if they beat previous numbers. Avidyne introduced a whole new generation of glass panel cockpits for the GA biz... and also showed the work they are doing with AI for the up and coming cockpit. Stratos has flown their 716X to Oshkosh... the first of a generation of experimental jet kits that will precede the certified version in the coming years. The Curti Aerospace Zefhir is now on sale... the very cool-looking two place turbine even has an emergency parachute and some VERY advanced engineering. ANN’s Jim Campbell had a chance

Legislators Introduce Much-Needed Flight Training Bills

Bills Prohibit The FAA From Defining Some Flight Training As “Carrying Persons Or Property For Compensation Or Hire”

In the nick of time; twin bills have been introduced in Congress this week to reverse the policy set forth by the FAA in their July 12 policy memo on flight training in Experimental, Limited, and Primary Category aircraft. In the Senate, S.2458 has been introduced by Sens. James Inhofe (R-Oklahoma), John Boozman (R-Arkansas), and Angus King (I-Maine). In the House, Rep. Sam Graves (R-Missouri) is sponsoring H.R.4645. The bills prohibit the FAA from defining flight training in these aircraft as “carrying persons or property for compensation or hire.”

Great Work! EAA Granted Exemption for Flight Training in Limited Category A/C

EAA Earns Their Keep By Addressing A Serious Isssue, Speedily

EAA has been granted a 'sweeping exemption' (and it is, thankfully, that) for flight training in Limited Category aircraft that any owner or operator can use. This exemption allows owners of Limited Category warbirds and their associated pilots and partners to continue training in their own aircraft following the disruptive fallout of the FAA interpretation and associated court ruling on operating certain aircraft for “compensation or hire” earlier this year. The exemption is similar to the letter of deviation authority (LODA) being used as a temporary regulatory fix for experimental aircraft. It allows for compensated flight training and checking for owners of Limited Categ

Gone West (Updated): One Of The Best Of Us... Dale 'Snort' Snodgrass

Military Jet Jock, Airshow Pilot, All-Around-Great Aero-Guy

OK... we held this one for a bit because we plainly didn't believe it until we had some official verification.... but a true aviation legend has gone west... Dale 'Snort' Snodgrass was lost in a GA accident at the Lewiston-Nez Perce County Regional Airport, about noon, Saturday. Flying a single-engine turbo-prop SIAI-Marchetti SM 1019B, something of a Bird-Dog with a turbine engine, the aircraft departed the runway about noon Saturday and went down shortly after departure. Local sources report that the high-wing bird went down in a nearby field and caught fire after impacting a short way from the airport’s taxiway Charlie, according to a report from Lewiston FD's Chief Travis Mykleb

FAA Redefines The Term/Title 'Astronaut'

Following Both The Branson Circus and the Bezos Launch, FAA Decides To Put Foot Down

In a conversation shared amongst several astronauts (mostly Shuttle veterans), the question that was posed was this.... if everyone who rides to space thinks they automatically become astronauts, does that make every airline passenger automatically becomes a pilot? Well, the FAA has thought long and hard about this, and issued an order clarifying the matter... and just in the nick of time, it seems. The 'Order provides guidelines, eligibility, and criteria for the administration of the FAA Commercial Space Astronaut Wings Program.'

AD: Dassault Aviation Airplanes

AD 2021-14-04 Prompted By A Report That Non-Certified ANCRA Seat Tracks Were Installed On Some Airplanes

The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for certain Dassault Aviation Model FALCON 7X airplanes and Model FALCON 2000EX airplanes. This AD was prompted by a report that non-certified ANCRA seat tracks were installed on some airplanes and that those seat tracks might not sustain required loads during an emergency landing. This AD requires replacement of certain ANCRA seat tracks with certified (Brownline) seat tracks, as specified in a European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) AD, which is incorporated by reference. The FAA is issuing this AD to address the unsafe condition on these products. This AD is effective August 26, 202

Aero-News: Quote of the Day (07.26.21)

“This in no way is an acceptable long-term fix for the serious safety problem that FAA and the courts have created, but the FAA flight standards team worked hard to create a solution for Limited Category aircraft through this exemption. As an advocacy organization that both routinely operates Limited Category aircraft and maintains strong relationships with key FAA personnel, we were able to quickly apply for relief that covers the entire community.” Source: Sean Elliott, EAA vice president of advocacy and safety, commenting on EAA's recent efforts to bring some sanity to recent FAA madness over the concept of what constitutes a commercial operation in terms of all manner of flight instruction operations.
