OK... let the pre-9/11 anniversary paranoia begin! A Friday missive credited to both the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security is warning the nation's security forces to be alert for a possible threat to the nation via small aircraft. While admitting that there is no specific or even credible threat yet defined (or accompanied by any real evidence), that hasn't kept the Feds from ratcheting up the paranoia factor and implicating a weapon system that, at best, would make for a pretty poor mode of attack -- namely small airplanes.

Hot air balloonists in California have achieved what may be a hollow victory over JCM Farming, Inc. of Solana Beach. In an apparent effort to impose its own restrictions on the use of airspace above its facility, the company filed lawsuits against hot air balloon ride providers. After more than two years, on August 15th, the suits were dropped, but some of the plaintiffs say their businesses are gone.

The FAA has certified Huntsville International Airport (KHSV) in Alabama to accommodate the Boeing 747-8. The August 17th certification approved the airport’s request, which will allow it to accommodate the aircraft on its 10,000-foot runway and 12,600-foot runway – the second-longest in the Southeast – as well as all associated taxiways. Huntsville International Airport is among 21 airports currently approved to accommodate this type of aircraft, including Chicago O’Hare, John F. Kennedy, Atlanta and Miami.
