House Armed Serviced Committee Breathes New Life Into Embattled
The full U.S. House Armed Services Committee (HASC) voted
Wednesday on a National Defense Authorization Bill that includes
$485 million in continued funding for the GE/Rolls-Royce F136
engine for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF).
Representative James Oberstar (D-MN), Chair of the House
Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, says he
expects the FAA re-authorization bill, which has been stalled in
Congress literally for years, will finally be ready for the
President's signature by July 4.
In what it says is a cost-cutting measure, United Parcel Service
(UPS) has announced it is going through with the furlough of
as many as 300 pilots as part of a effort to cut $1.4 billion in
overhead. The plan was first unvieled in February, and the first 54
are scheduled to be idled beginning next week.

development for an alternate engine for the Joint Strike Fighter.
Competition is warranted and critical and costs nothing more
according to the Government Accountability Office
(GAO).” Source: Ranking HASC
member Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R-MD).
The FAA's Aviation Safety (AVS) directorate has published a work
plan as a guide as it establishes the standards and policies for
NextGen operations, certify compliance with those standards, and
assure continued operational safety.
