in a rural area south of San Diego yesterday afternoon.
The Air Force isn't being stealthy about plans to upgrade its
B-2 Spirit fleet; officials say the bomber will need numerous
upgrades over its life span. Some upgrades are already complete,
but others are planned years, even decades ahead, said Lt. Col.
Brian Zembraski, 509th Bomb Wing director of staff at Whiteman Air
Force Base, Mo.
The tasking is constant, and the daily flight schedule is packed
with missions for one Army helicopter squadron flying with the
Marine Corps in Iraq. A group of highly skilled pilots and crew
chiefs are the reason for success.
Aircraft play a vital role in accomplishing missions in
Iraq. They ferry troops and equipment, provide fire support for
embattled Soldiers, and gather priceless intelligence on enemy
activities. But without fuel to keep their rotor blades spinning,
those birds would be little more than useless lumps of metal
dotting the flightlines of military bases across Iraq.
