City Leaders Express Concerns About The Potential Closure Of Contract Towers
Seventy Mayors and community leaders from around the country whose communities would be affected by the FAA’s potential, scheduled closure of contract air traffic control towers have written a letter to FAA Administrator Michael Huerta. The letter expresses concern over the impact of these potential closures on their communities, and highlights the vital role of local airports to businesses, organizations, emergency services, and the economy as a whole.
The FAA has issued a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB CE-13-07R1) concerning potential in-flight fires on Cessna T206H airplanes associated with an exhaust system issue. The agency says that there is the potential for in-flight fire as a result of failure of the V-band coupling (V-band clamp) securing the tailpipe to the turbocharger or the wastegate elbow to the wastegate valve.
FAA Expresses 'Concern' About Virtual Learning Options
With more online classes emerging for aviation students, an increasing number of student pilots are reportedly turning to distance learning to help gain their aviation qualifications. U.K.-based pilot supply shop Flightstore says distance learning is proving to be a popular choice for aviation students looking to achieve their qualifications in their own time, however the FAA has expressed some concerns about the amount of students choosing virtual learning options.
Extends Contract Through The End Of The Fiscal Year
Saying it needs to get "more stakeholder input" on contract weather monitoring at 121 airports, the FAA said Wednesday that it plans to delay cancelling contracts with weather observers at those facilities and transferring the duties to air traffic controllers. The contracts have been extended through September 30, the end of the fiscal year.
Organizers of the Dayton Air Show say that attendance could be down as much as 30 percent because there will be no military presence at the show this year. The show normally draws about 70,000 people over a weekend.
