American Heroes Air Show Includes Citizenship Ceremony

The American Heroes Air Show calls itself the US's premier aviation event devoted exclusively to helicopters. The show returns to Canton, Georgia, outside Atlanta, on Saturday, September 10th. Event Director Mike Grier invites families to get an up-close look at these go-fast, high-tech aircraft and learn how their crews are on the front lines every day of homeland security, national defense and public service.

The 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, known as the Hurricane Hunters of the Air Force Reserve, is one-of-a-kind: the only Department of Defense organization still flying into tropical storms and hurricanes--since 1944. Hurricane Watch A formal advisory issued by forecasters at the National Hurricane Center when they have determined that hurricane conditions are a potential threat to a coastal area or group of islands within a 24 to 36 hour period. A watch is used to inform the public and marine interests of the storm's location, intensity, and movement.

"We made our first flights on Friday as soon as it was safe to fly... One of our first stops was to Governor's Harbour on Eleuthera Island to deliver supplies and check on our staff and our base camp there. Though there was damage, we are just all so thankful no one has been injured." Source: Cameron King, Bahamas Habitat's Aviation and Disaster Relief Coordinator, discussing how the organization started delivering aid to numerous points in the Bahamas affected by Hurricane Irene. The organization moved quickly and had its first planes arriving on Friday August 26th shortly after the storm passed to the north.
