A construction crew laying pipeline near the Pajaro River in
north Monterey County, CA unearthed the remains of a World War
II-era Douglas SBD-5 Dauntless in early July. The Pajaro Valley
Water Management Agency collected and secured the artifacts, which
were discovered in the middle of farmland.

The friction caused by the glazed surface is not uniform, and when
the brakes are applied, they grab and release rapidly, causing a
chatter or squealing sound.
"It's a political world. I would have to believe that
kind of upped the ante and elevated the stakes, and these guys knew
they had to make a decision and move the airport."
