It may accelerate ions and electrons, and may travel through interplanetary space as far as the Earth's orbit and beyond it, often preceded by a shock front.   Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX)  A space mission, proposed by Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in San Antonio, to study the interstellar boundary - the region between our solar system and interstellar space. The Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) was one of five candidates selected by NASA in November 2003 to compete for two mission slots in NASA's Explorer Program of low cost, rapidly developed scientific spacecraft. IBEX was launched by a Pegasus LV from Kwajalein Missile Range on October 19, 2008.
