"There was really no place else to go. A hard surface is much
better. I really didn’t want to land out in a field, even if
I could. You flip over, who’s going to be there?"
Source: Instructor John Vashko, in his first
public comments regarding Sunday's emergency landing on a freeway
near Chicago, IL. Vashko and his student, Casey Mattuck, had just
taken off from Schaumberg Regional Airport when the engine of their
Piper Warrior quit, forcing the men to land on the Elgin-O'Hare
Expressway. Vashko came forward, in part, to deny reports the
accident occured because the airplane ran out of fuel.
