The US Army purchased its first heavier-than-air aircraft, a Wright Model A, in 1908. It was allocated the serial number 1. Further Army aircraft were assigned serial numbers in sequence of their purchase.

Source: Tim Nelson, who along with Pan Am International Flight Academy coworker Hugh Sims contacted the FBI in August 2001 regarding the suspicious behavior of Zacarias Moussaoui, a student at the time. The US State Department recently rewarded a third Pan Am flight instructor, Clarence (Clancy) Prevost, $5 million for tipping off the FBI to Moussaoui's actions, one month before the 9/11 attacks.
