Violations
The Federal Aviation Administration announced Thursday actions
totaling $7.1 million in civil penalties against American Airlines
for improperly deferring maintenance on safety-related equipment
and deficiencies with its drug and alcohol testing programs and
exit lighting inspections.
The number of scheduled domestic and international passengers on
US airlines during the first five months of 2008 grew by 0.1
percent from the same period in 2007, reaching 310.4 million, 0.3
million more than a year earlier, the US Department of
Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported
Thursday.
Lower Oil Prices Could Mean Profits... Even For United

airlines. That's the word from one analyst with Morgan Stanley, who
predicted Monday 2009 could be a profitable year for many
airlines.
Goodrich Corporation and Rolls-Royce plc announced Thursday both
companies have signed a Letter of Intent proposing the formation of
a joint venture company, which would develop and supply engine

American Airlines has determined oil residue heated by an engine
caused Flight 31, bound from Los Angeles to Honolulu, to return to
Los Angeles International Airport on August 5. The odor of the oil
and a smoky haze was taken into the cabin through the air
conditioning system.
Howard Attarian Tasked With Coordinating Flight Standards
United Airlines announced this week that Howard Attarian has
been named vice president of Flight Operations. In this role,
Attarian will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of
United's Flight Operations division, including pilot domiciles,
flight standards and flight technical.

Will Waive Fees For Third Piece Of Checked Luggage
What a difference a couple days -- and highly-focused public
outrage -- can make. On Thursday, American Airlines bowed to recent
outcry surrounding the Fort Worth-based airline's practice of
charging active military personnel a fee to check their baggage
when shipping out.
Progress on Boeing's oft-delayed 787 Dreamliner continues to
move slowly towards first flight, scheduled for November. Last
weekend, Boeing began tests of the landing gear on the first
aircraft, swinging both the nosegear and main landing gear as part
of its testing efforts.
