As of Dec. 31, 2009, ALPA tells ANN that Continental pilots will see another year pass without a new contract in place. The current concessionary agreement that helped keep Continental out of bankruptcy was signed in April 2005 and became amendable on Dec. 31, 2008.

Alaska Airlines Pilots Take Care Of Their Own

Alaska Pilots Raise Funds, Distribute Checks to Furloughees 

T'is the season... as ALPA tells us that Alaska Airlines’ furloughed pilots recently received a holiday gift from their fellow pilots in the form of a check. In a little more than a month, Alaska Airlines’ pilots—joined by some of Alaska Airlines’ crew schedulers and planners and management—contributed $24,000 to the Furloughed Pilots Christmas Fund, the brainchild of Alaska First Officers Will McQuillen and Nate Chilman, who both were furloughed from a different carrier prior to coming to work at Alaska.

Israel Aerospace Industries' Bedek Aviation Group (IAI/Bedek) received a Civil Aviation Administration of Israel (CAAI) Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) on December 17, 2009 and an FAA STC on December 21, 2009 for its prototype B767-300BDSF (Bedek Special Freighter) aircraft.

In July of 1942, while the United States remained embroiled in World War II, famed industrialist Henry Kaiser proposed a fleet of flying transports to safely protect troops and supplies from German U-boats.  Joining forces with Howard Hughes, Kaiser obtained an $18,000,000 government contract to construct three “Flying Boats.”  Due to government restrictions on critical war material, such as steel and aluminum, Hughes used a process called “Duramold” to create almost every part of the plane.  Using a plywood-like series of thin wood laminations, engineers built an airframe both lighter and stronger than aluminum.  The resulting wooden aircraft
