As investigators work to determine what led to the emergency
landing of a British Airways Boeing 777 Thursday at London's
Heathrow Airport, the captain of the flight played down his role in
the successful outcome... giving credit instead to the first
officer, who was the flying pilot at the time.
"Take whatever time you need, but get it right." That was the
stern message John Plueger, chief operating officer of
International Lease Finance Corporation, has for Boeing, following
this week's announcement of a second delay to its 787 Dreamliner
program.
In the words of one union representative, it was "an
acknowledgement of a debt owed." This week, American Airlines
handed out some $67 million in bonuses to employees at the Fort
Worth, TX-based carrier, as well as its American Eagle
subsidiary.
This may be something of a rarity in these turbulent times: an
airline apparently NOT in a hurry to merge with another carrier. At
least, that's what Continental Airlines CEO Larry Kellner would
have us believe.
