NASA Posts Space Launch System Acquisition Overview

Sets Timelines For Development Of SLS Components

NASA has released the acquisition overview for the Space Launch System (SLS), its new, advanced, heavy-lift launch vehicle. NASA officials say this new heavy-lift rocket - in combination with the Orion crew capsule already under development, increased support for the commercialization of astronaut travel to low Earth orbit, an extension of activities on the International Space Station until at least 2020, and a fresh focus on new technologies - is key to implementing the plan laid out by President Obama and Congress in the bipartisan 2010 NASA Authorization Act.

Goal Is To Study How Plants Germinate In A Microgravity Environment

"Plants in Space," a unique science project designed to allow students and teachers to examine root growth in microgravity and compare the results with those from plants used in their own ground-based experiments, has been initiated aboard the International Space Station.

Goal Is To Design And Build An R/C Or Autonomous Robot That Could Operate On The Moon

NASA is accepting applications from teams of U.S. and international undergraduate and graduate students for the third annual Lunabotics Mining Competition. Participants in the competition will design and build a remote controlled or autonomous robot, which could be used for future exploration on the moon.

Solar Electric Airship UAV Development Advances

Global Near Space Services (GNSS) and Bye Engineering Partners say they've concluded Phase 2 engineering of the StarLight high-altitude long-endurance solar electric airship intelligence and surveillance platform. The program was conducted under the supervision of the Naval Air Systems Command, Aircraft Division.
