Japan is heading to the moon. Early Friday morning, local time,
Japan's first lunar orbiter launched successfully from the small
island of Tanegashima, off the southern tip of Kyushu Island.
The National Transportation Safety Board recommended last week
that pilots be required to equip their aircraft with a 406-MHz
emergency locator transmitter (ELT). The recommendation comes as
satellites will no longer monitor 121.5-MHz ELT signals after
February 1, 2009.
