Burt Rutan, Mike Melvill and the team at Scaled Composites on the
safe and successful completion of their mission.
Privately-Funded Spacecraft Makes It To 100 KM Milestone
Burt Rutan's SpaceShipOne, piloted by 62-year old Mike Melvill
(below), achieved its goal Monday. It boosted to an altitude of
328,000 feet -- 62.5 miles -- becoming the world's first
private-industry astronaut.
Ya gotta admit it... ANN's Editor-In-Chief, Jim Campbell shows
up in the darnedest places... and for those who were watching the
Beech Starship that shepherded White Knight and Space Ship One up
to it's launch point, you were also watching him aboard the
Starship, shooting some of the 400 high-resolution digital images
that he shot that day. It was an amazing flight... a dramatic
flight...
