Statement From Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison On Griffin's Memo
In response this study announced [last week] in a notice to
members of Congress, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), Chairman of
the Commerce Subcommittee on Science and Space, released the
following statement.
NASA's Griffen Outlines New Study He Wants Done By
Mid-July
SUBJECT: Exploration Systems Architecture Study Support
As a critical component of the Agency replanning effort, I have
initiated an Exploration Systems Architecture Study. The study team
will begin immediately and must complete its activities by mid-July
to support a number of key Agency decisions.
NASA's new administrator, Michael Griffin, wants to reduce
what's becoming known as the "shuttle gap" -- the time between
retirement of the current space plane fleet and the construction of
a new generation of orbiters.
NASA managers decided Friday to switch external fuel tanks for
the upcoming space shuttle missions. They came to the conclusion
that it would be best to make safety modifications to the tank that
is not attached to Discovery.
