Online Followers Will Have An Opportunity To Attend Transfer Ceremony

NASA and the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum will invite 30 of their social media followers to the first "NASA Social" on April 19 to welcome space shuttle Discovery to the national collection. Registration opens at noon EDT Thursday, March 15, and closes at noon Friday, March 16. Thirty participants will be selected randomly from online registrations.

NASA Sub-Scale Solid-Rocket Motor Tests Material For Space Launch System

Will Assist In Development Of Full-Scale SLS SRBs

A sub-scale solid rocket motor designed to mimic NASA's Space Launch System, or SLS, booster design successfully was tested Wednesday by engineers at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL. The 20-second firing tested new insulation materials on the 24-inch-diameter, 109-inch-long motor. The motor is a scaled down, low-cost replica of the solid rocket motors that will boost SLS off the launch pad.

Both Recognized For Work In The Aviation And Aerospace Fields

The Smithsonian Institute has announced the recipients of its 2012 National Air and Space Museum Lifetime Achievement and Current Achievement categories. Burt Rutan has been selected to receive the Lifetime Achievement award, while the Current Achievement trophy will go to the Cassini-Huygens Flight team. They will be presented their awards March 21 at a black-tie dinner in Washington, D.C.
