Gone West: NASM Deputy Director Donald Lopez

WWII Pilot And Aviation Legend Was 84

Aero-News learned Tuesday that Donald S. Lopez, 84, deputy director of the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, died of a heart attack on March 3. Lopez had been with the Smithsonian Institution since 1972, when he became part of the team led by Apollo 11 astronaut Michael Collins responsible for planning the construction and opening of the National Air and Space Museum.

NASA's GLAST Spacecraft Arrives In Florida

Weird Name, Important Mission

NASA tells ANN its Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope, or GLAST, arrived Tuesday at the Astrotech payload processing facility near the Kennedy Space Center to begin final preparations for launch. Liftoff of GLAST aboard a Delta II rocket is currently targeted for 1145 EDT on May 16.
