About The Lama

Aerospatial SA-315B At The Top Of The World

The Aerospatial SA-315B isn't new, but it's considered to be the best high-altitude helicopter in the world.

Able to carry a pilot and four passengers, the Llama holds the world altitude record for helicopter flight -- 40,433 feet -- set in 1972.

The aircraft was built after a request to Sud-Aviation from the Indian Air Force for a helicopter capable of effective operations at high altitudes. Based on the Alouette II, it was manufactured in India as the HAL Cheetah and in Brazil as the Helibras HB.315B Gaviao.
