The girls will be transported by Greenville Jet Center to tour
the air traffic control tower and Special Services Corporation will
show them their aircraft maintenance facility and provide a plane
for them to look inside the cockpit. "Then our Girl Scouts
will complete a variety of hands-on projects that are required to
earn the badge," said Lynn Arve, Director of Program Services,Girl
Scouts of South Carolina - Mountains to Midlands.
"The Girl Scouts will learn about aviation while making a paper
airplane, which they will modify as we go, so they can see how
adding flaps changes the flight of the plane," stated Mike Gisman
A.K.A. "Molecular Mike", with Mad Science of the Upstate. "We will
also launch a couple of model rockets with different engines,"
Grisman said. "They will also make a kite and fly it," added
Grisman. Lunch will be provided by Greeniville Downtown airport's
Runway Cafe.
"Many pilots discovered their interest in aviation in their youth,"
stated Joe Frasher, Airport Director of Greenville Downtown
Airport. "Our industry is facing a future pilot shortage and we are
always looking for ways to inspire youth with the awe of
aviation," stated Frasher. "Maybe one of these girl
will grow up and fly for Southwest Airlines," Frasher noted.
The mission of the Girl Scouts is to build girls of courage,
confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.
