Sea-Tac To Provide Gateside A/C For Idle Airliners

With Piped-In Air, Shutting Down APUs Makes Green Sense

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport has received federal funding to construct a central utility plant capable of providing conditioned air to airliners parked gateside, saving fuel while cutting noise and pollution caused by auxiliary power units.

USA Today reports Port of Seattle commissioners gave their approval last week for the $33 million project. Federal Aviation Administration grants will pay for $22 million of the cost.

Commissioners said that gateside airliners would no longer need to rely on auxiliary power units to keep passengers comfortable, and the system would be environmentally friendly by reducing pollution and greenhouse gases emitted by the APUs.

The system consists of a central heating and air conditioning plant to produce the conditioned air, and a distribution network that will duct the air into parked airliners.

The project is slated to begin next year, with its completion expected sometime in 2012.
