Cheaper by The Half Dozen? Aegean Airlines Buys A Further Six Airbus A320s

The fast growing Aegean Airlines has ordered six more A320s. This will eventually bring their fleet to 25 A320 Family aircraft. The first new aircraft was delivered earlier this year to the Greek airline.

The airline's A320s are powered by IAE V2500 engines, and are equipped with a comfortable two-class layout.

The A320s will replace older generation aircraft in Aegean's fleet and will be the cornerstone of the airline's expansion on high-traffic routes in Europe and in growing regional markets, flying from its bases in Athens and Thessaloniki. Aegean's scheduled European operations include code-share flights with Lufthansa.

Theodoros Vassilakis, President and Managing Director of Aegean Airlines, explained: "Our success on both domestic and international routes gives us the confidence and the drive to continue to invest in a larger, modern fleet. After completion of the delivery process, Aegean Airlines will operate the youngest fleet in South-eastern Europe. This demonstrates our commitment to quality for our customers."

"We are very proud to see a renewed direct order from Aegean Airlines again this year", said Airbus Chief Operating Officer Customers, John Leahy "and we are happy to contribute to the success of this dynamic airline with our market leading A320 Family."

Airbus notes that further aerodynamic refinements and an all-new lighter cabin help reduce fuel burn and emissions further, and make the A320 Family 'the most environmentally friendly single-aisle aircraft in operation.' Centralised maintenance with extended servicing intervals, and proven reliability in day-to-day service contribute to give it the lowest operating costs.

The A320 Family share operational commonality, and fly by wire controls, which means crews can work across the entire Family range with minimal re-training. More than 5,300 A320 Family aircraft have been ordered to date of which over 3,100 have been delivered to 185 customers worldwide, making it the best selling commercial jetliner ever.
