Singapore Airlines Lays Off Flight and Cabin Crew

Singapore Airlines, still reeling from this Spring's SARS scare, just announced that it is sending twenty-six pilots and 156 attendants home for a while.

They're not sick -- they're laid off.

Most of the front-seaters -- 21 -- are captains; the flight attendants are from "all ranks," according to reports. The airline currently employs about 1,800 flight crew and 6,600 cabin crew.

A statement issued in relation to the layoff annouoncement read, in part, "Although compulsory no-pay leave and wage cuts have helped reduce staff costs, these measures alone could not address the prevailing surplus crew. It was therefore necessary to reduce the numbers through retrenchment and the termination of contracts."
