Engine Malfunction May Have Led To Downing of Air Algerie 737-200

Flight Apparently Never Got Off The Ground

An apparent engine fire on board an Air Algerie passenger jet may have caused it to crash in flames Thursday. One person survived; 102 people were killed according to Algeria's Transport Ministry.

The Boeing 737-200 crashed at the end of the runway in Tamanrasset, 1,000 miles south of Algiers, sliding into the airport's perimeter fence and bursting into flames.

"The plane was picking up speed when one of the engines caught fire," Interior Minister Nourredine Zerhouni said Friday. Ninety-seven passengers and six crew members were killed. One passenger, a young soldier, survived.
