Jeppesen Offers Virtual Classroom

An Ol' Dawg's New Tricks

Do your Flight Crews or Maintenance Technicians require Recurrency Training? At the NBAA Convention in Orlando Florida, Jeppesen demonstrated its new web-based, flight training system, and it has been developed with you in mind. Currently there are 7 modules containing 24 lessons on over 60 topics.

Training modules include aviation weather, performance, charts and navigation, airport operations, regulations, flight procedures and human factors. What Jeppesen offers to their customers is quality classroom training without the classroom time.

"Jeppesen Flight Crew Training is a great asset for any corporate flight department. The program uses the latest technology to cost-effectively deliver recurrent training to pilots while improving operational efficiency," said Mike Abbott, Jeppesen director, Internet Business Services. "Additionally, the administrative toolsets make it easier and less time-consuming for training mangers to plan and track ongoing pilot training activities in a centralized web-based location."

Jeppesen has had a long history in developing training materials for pilots and aviation technician training products. This system will be using instructional design principles like objective-based learning and pre-tests that identify exactly what subjects need additional study, and what is already known.

The graphics are nice, the voice-over narration which follows the text is nice, but the really nice feature has got to be the Toolset. What this system really does is creates a total class room for the user while helping the administrator keep track of who needs training, what training they need and keeps track of the completed training.

This information is then stored in a data base which belongs to Jeppesen. This means that the customer does not have to worry about not having enough disk space on their computer systems to run the program and store the data.

The software program as demonstrated seems both user friendly and intuitive. The training modules themselves are colorful, interactive and use graphics to help explain topics which are not easily communicated using standard textbook techniques.

Jeppesen is offering two tiers of service. Tier 1 offers the learner access to web-based recurrent training content as well as administrative management functions such as the ability to edit user profiles, monitor user progress, create custom curriculum from the lessons provided and more.

Tier 2 features everything available in Tier 1 plus corporate customization, enhanced management options like instructor-led training scheduling and management, tracking of outside learning activities such as simulator training as well as enhanced user profile options.

For anyone trying to keep recurrency training on track for their aviation business, Jeppesen is offering a very thoughtful solution.
