Aero-TV: Safety Tip of the Week - Allen Silver, Different ‘Chute Shapes

FAA Master Rigger Allen Silver Shares His Best Parachute Safety Tips

Internationally recognized as one of the world’s premiere parachute experts, Allen Silver has been an FAA Master Rigger since 1974.  Designated as a Parachute Rigger Examiner for the FAA in 1991, he now serves as chairman of the Parachute Industry Association (PIA) Rigging Committee.  Silver sat down with Aero-TV to share his most invaluable safety tips for emergency bailout preparation.

In the fourth part of his four part series, Allen Silver explains the vital differences between round parachutes and rectangular, termed “ram-airs,” parachutes most often used in controlled skydiving.   In contrast to round parachutes, ram-air type parachutes have very fast forward speeds requiring extensive training.

Often times, in an emergency situation, a pilot will want to limit the amount of forward speed in order to either minimize the risk of injury upon reaching the ground or minimize complications due to an injury sustained during an emergency bailout. Join Aero-TV as Silver explains how pilots can choose what parachute type is most appropriate for their skill level in order to maximize safety in an emergency bailout situation.

Based in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1972, Allen Silver is the owner and operator of Silver Parachute Sales & Service.  As specialist in emergency parachutes, Silver Parachute Sales & Service is the largest dealer of the SOFTIE pilot emergency parachutes by Para-Phernalia, Inc.

In addition, the company provides in-depth parachute assistance, in both rigging and repair services, to aerobatic and glider pilots.  Silver also travels the country conducting critical safety seminars on such topics as emergency bailout procedures, parachute care, and parachute selection.
