SAS Selects Eight A350 XWBs And Four A330s

Airbus Fleet Will Bring The Airline Into A New Long Haul Future

Scandinavian carrier SAS has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for eight A350 XWBs and four A330s, as part of its strategy to modernize its fleet with more fuel-efficient aircraft. The agreement was signed in the Norwegian capital, Oslo. The new A350-900s and A330-300s will join the airline’s existing fleet of 30 Airbus aircraft. Engine selection for the A330s will be announced by the airline at a later date.

Revenue growth has recovered to pre-recession levels and the U.S. airline industry is expected to maintain profitability in 2013, according to Tailwinds, a report on the airline industry from PwC US. However, while the industry has become better at managing capacity and generating ancillary revenues, it faces rising costs for fuel, labor and maintenance. To achieve profitability under these conditions, airlines are focused on operating more efficiently and securing new revenue streams.

Released From Nearly 10,000 Feet Off The Coast Of Italy

ESA’s experimental reentry vehicle passed its milestone descent and landing test on last week at the Poligono Interforze Salto di Quirra off the east coast of Sardinia in Italy. The full-scale Intermediate eXperimental Vehicle (IXV) prototype was released from an altitude of 3000 m (about 10,000 feet) by a helicopter, falling to gain speed to mimic a space mission before parachute deployment.

Three Planets Found In Habitable Zone Of Nearby Star

Gliese 667C Reexamined By European Southern Observatory

A team of astronomers has combined new observations of Gliese 667C with existing data from HARPS at ESO’s 3.6-metre telescope in Chile, to reveal a system with at least six planets. A record-breaking three of these planets are super-Earths lying in the zone around the star where liquid water could exist, making them possible candidates for the presence of life. This is the first system found with a fully packed habitable zone.
