Las Cruces Airport Accepts USAF Offer To Repair Runway

But It's Only About A Third Of What City Officials Asked For

Las Cruces, NM, has finally come to terms with the US Air Force.

The dispute that's raged for more than a year between the town and the service has apparently been settled -- for a lot less than Las Cruces city leaders were initially asking for.

As Aero-News initially reported in September, 2004, two Air Force planes traveling with President Bush landed against the advice of local officials during a presidential visit to the small desert town, digging two-inch-deep ruts for a half-mile down a runway made soft by the blistering desert heat.

Las Cruces city officials later filed a complaint with the Air Force, demanding $2 million to repair the damaged runway. The Air Force, in return, offered $603,754. The Las Cruces City Council has now accepted the offer.

Runway 4/22 has been practically closed to all aircraft since the incident. There was no immediate word on when the runway would be rebuilt.
