Airborne-Unmanned 06.25.19: Falco Xplorer, AUVSI On UAS Security, Japan UAV Regs

Also: Howler Counter-UAS, Drones v Forest Fires, Corgan Design, Raytheon-AirMap Collaboration

Leonardo introduced its largest-ever Remotely-Piloted Air System (RPAS), the Falco Xplorer, last week at the Paris Air Show.

The new drone features a payload capacity of 770 pounds, more than 24 hours flight time and a satellite communications capability for beyond-radio-line-of-sight operations, all within a 1.3 ton maximum take-off weight (MTOW). At a hearing held by the US Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee Subcommittee on Security last week, Brian Wynne, president and CEO of AUVSI, called for accelerated federal rulemakings and the development of holistic policy solutions that provide the framework to keep the nation’s skies secure. In his testimony, Wynne emphasized the importance of approaching UAS security from an overall airspace management perspective, rather than focusing solely on how to interdict an errant drone. You just had to know THIS was coming... The Japanese parliament has passed a law making it a criminal offense to fly a drone while intoxicated. Those convicted of flying a drone weighing more than seven ounces while intoxicated can be fined up to 300,000 yen (approx. $2,800) and face up to a year in prison. The new law also lays out fines for pilots who fly their aircraft in an unsafe manner. For instance, if a pilot intentionally plunges a drone rapidly towards a crowd, he or she could be fined up to 500,000 yen (approx. $4,600). All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne-Unmanned!!!
